In order to gain access to network resources, the workstation needs software installed which can enable the workstation's operating system to access network resources as if they were an integral element of the workstation.
The software is known as Client software.
Microsoft and Novell have their own client software. In some cases, where there is a mixed Windows NT and Novell network both clients must be installed on the workstation.
The Microsoft Client tends to be far less complex than the Novell Client owing to the lack of Directory Services in Microsoft networks.
Client software can support the following network functions:
- Logging in to the network
- Printing
- Allocating drive letters to network folders
- Sending messages
- Enabling software distribution from a Server to the workstation
- Sending messages to other clients on the network
Installing the Novell Client
To install the Novell Client
- Insert the NetWare 5 Client disk into the CDROM drive of the Workstation
Note: If the workstation does not possess a CD-ROM drive and is set up with some other form of Client software, the CD disk may be mounted as a volume in the Server CD-ROM device and accessed over the network.
